Mamoru Hosoda's 2015 Film The Boy and The Beast Gets Musical Adaptation in 2022

A musical adaptation of Mamoru Hosoda's 2015 anime feature film Bakemono no Ko / The Boy and The Beast is now in the works by Japan's renowned theater company Gekidan Shiki / Shiki Theatre Company. As the largest scale new original musical show in the 70-year history of the company, it is scheduled to be performed at JR-East Shiki Theater AKI (capacity: 1,200) in Tokyo from April 30, 2022.

The Boy and The Beast was produced by Studio Chizu and released in Japan in July 2015. The 119-minute film earned 5.85 billion yen (53 million USD) from its domestic run and won the Animation of the Year at the 37th Japan Academy Prizes.

This is the first musical adaptation of a Studio Chizu film by Shiki Theatre Company, which is known for its Japanese language adaptations of popular musicals based on foreign anime films, such as The Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King. For the play, auditions to recruit child actors to play the childhood roles of the three main characters (Kyuta/Ren, Ichirohiko, Jiromaru) will be held in a venue in Tokyo between August 19 and 22.

Message from Mamoru Hosoda:

I am very honored that the animation film "The Boy and The Beast" by Studio Chizu will be adapted into a musical by the members of Shiki Theatre Company. I've heard that it will be performed next spring, and I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of show it will be. I hope that many people will be able to see it.
